Took a break from installation building to work on a study that I'll be donating to ArtCares 2011, benefitting the AIDS Taskforce of Greater Cleveland. Based on a photo of the construction hoist, this is a spatially oriented study for the Space Elevator install. Hard to see, but in this image are one of the power boxes built below and the beginnings of the tower I'll be building tomorrow. Check 'em at the ArtCares event, April 16, 2011.

Crossbeam Making Machine

Thank goodness I liked math so much in school. That's the little tool I made after eyeballing it didn't work out.

The mat cutter and I got into a fight yesterday. On the left are all of the pieces it destroyed. The few on the right are the beginning of my road to recovery.

Eventually things were under control. Thus, the above columns are the first set of posts for the modular unit of the tower where the elevator will be attached. The number of units will depend on the ceiling height in the exhibition space. Tomorrow's mission is to make the crossbeams without messing up the angles, especially since I have exactly enough pieces.

3rd grate almost done..

These are taking forever! In the meantime, check out these images from the install of the video, Off Duty (Victory), as installed in the University of Michigan Jean Paul Slusser Gallery (images courtesy John Kannenberg):

Just another blizzard studio day

While this was going on outside, I was busy working on this, inside:

The most recent piece of the space elevator, this sits on top of the ceiling. Made entirely out of foamcore, it's about 14" x 22" x 14". And boy, was that lid a pain.

How to Construct a Space Elevator

A growing collection of parts for the Space Elevator - gates, tool boxes, and power panels. Now if it would only warm up so that I can shoot the accompanying video, Cancel.
