Involuntary Memory No. 2

Definitely feels good to start and finish building something in one evening - even if it means procrastinating other work. Regardless, above is Object for Involuntary Memory No. 2. Excited to determine where to install this piece.

Mocking 1st Piece

Above is a loose mock-up of the installation of the first involuntary memory sculpture. I have a more specific location intended for the piece in the North Chagrin Reservation of the Metroparks that actually looks nothing like this, but it's at least nice to see the object in a setting. It would have been nice if today had been sunny and green long enough to have shot the actual installation, but it's turning to spring or summer someday.. right?

Tonight's to-do list:
-Make Involuntary Memory Object No. 2
-Finish grate 4
-Begin cutting pieces for Tower interior

Exhausted today. We'll see how it goes.

Involuntary Memory Object No. 1

These are images of the first involuntary memory object which is now thisclose to being finished. I plan on tidying up some of the details, but this is the gist of it. And yes, it is a toaster. I guess I should probably explain a little about the project.

In this series of small installations, I was interested in the notion that Proustian or involuntary memory (those memories that are triggered by everyday objects or smells that immediately draw up an intense experience of the past) is a way of experiencing nonlinear time, because you relive these memories, in a sense. For this series, I'm basically taking objects from my everyday, recreating them by hand, and turning them in to triggers by making them an anomaly in the setting where a viewer would happen upon them. Thus, these objects are not intended for gallery.

More to come later on the intended setting - I have to leave something as a surprise. Formal documentation of object and installation will be posted to the website by next week.

Object for Involuntary Memory No. 1

This idea has been in the works for years, literally. It's nice to see the beginning of its being tangible. In-progress image of the first piece of the upcoming series of sculptural installations. Time travel, y'all! As soon as the weather is nice enough to document, these will start to pop up on the website.
Building a ladder so close to the end of this project feels somewhat appropriate, I guess. I've almost extricated myself from this incredibly detailed and time-consuming project. In other news, I've decided to rehash an old idea - hopefully with more success than previous times. More on that to come.

How cool is this?

I feel kinda fancy, not gonna lie.

Getting into gear! (Bwahahaha)

Circles are especially fun to try to make when you can't find any stores that carry compasses! Went the old fashioned radii + connect-the-dot route. See below:

But eventually, I was able to finish the last of the rooftop lift mechanism. Below are images of the gear installed with all hardware and a partial shot of the whole mechanism. Grate 4 and walls are all that are left!

Also, here's a shot of the crowd from the lecture at the CSU/CMA event Cafe Bellas Artes, hosted by the Wall Eye Gallery, where I was one of the guest lecturers:

On the walls are works from their recent exhibition, Intuitive Visions. Are you in this crowd? :)

Lift off?

Above are the plans I'm working from to create the lift mechanism that sits on top of the hoist.. err, I mean space elevator. Definitely the trickiest part of the construction thus far.

Humble beginnings for this section, but it is the bulk of the work. The rest from here is just detail. With the lift mechanism almost done and the 4th and final grate in the works, all that's left to start and finish are the walls.

Finished all the detail work for the first unit of the tower. These units are intended to be stacked floor to ceiling in the installation space.

I might need a bigger studio.

The tower went together more easily than I expected, even though the crossbeams are a little more fragile than they look.

Now Sofya has decided that with the plastic on to protect it, it's kind of like her new fort.
